Mommers vs Cascade lead

What are the differences?

When choosing lead came for stained glass, you may come across both Mommers lead and Cascade lead. Both have been used for stained-glass work, but there are differences in the available profiles, specifications and current availability.

At Fenix Glas, we do not consider one brand simply “better” than the other. The most suitable lead depends on the type of stained-glass panel, the dimensions required and the working characteristics preferred by the maker.

Mommers and Cascade at Fenix Glas

Fenix Glas has supplied Mommers lead profiles in the past. Today, our regular lead assortment mainly consists of Cascade lead came.

This means that many common Cascade profiles are either kept in stock or included in our regular purchasing programme. For projects requiring a less common size or specification, additional profiles may be available to order.

Cascade lead came

The Cascade profiles in our current range are supplied in lengths of approximately 196 cm. The profiles have defined dimensions for the face, channel and core, depending on the profile.

Our assortment includes several types of Cascade came, including:

H profiles
Y profiles
reinforced lead profiles
profiles with a 2 mm core
different hardnesses for selected dimensions
specialist profiles and dimensions

The regular Cascade lead is supplied in 25 kg boxes for many profiles. Individual lengths of several commonly used profiles are also available from Fenix Glas.

Mommers lead

Mommers lead has previously formed part of the Fenix Glas assortment and will therefore be familiar to many professional stained-glass studios and restorers.

Our historical assortment included various H profiles as well as reinforced lead and specialist profiles.

Mommers profiles are no longer part of our regular stocked range. If you are working with an existing Mommers specification, however, please send us the dimensions or old profile reference. We can check which current profile corresponds most closely to the dimensions you require.

Cascade profiles regularly available from Fenix Glas

Fenix Glas carries a broad selection of Cascade lead profiles. Our range includes commonly used dimensions such as:

H profiles
H4, H5, H6, H7, H8, H9, H10, H12, H15, H18 and H20 in various channel widths and specifications.
Examples include H6/4, H6/4.5, H7/5, H8/4, H8/5, H8/7, H10/4.5, H10/7, H12/4, H12/7, H15/5 and H18/4.5.
Y profiles
Our Cascade range also includes Y profiles such as Y6/5, Y8/5 and Y10/5.
Reinforced lead
For applications requiring reinforced came, several reinforced Cascade profiles are available, including commonly used H8, H10 and H15 dimensions.
Special profiles
Selected half-soft, hard, thicker-core and other non-standard profiles are also available.

Not every profile is physically in stock at all times. Current stock can be checked in our webshop, and other Cascade profiles can often be supplied on request.

Looking for a replacement for a Mommers profile?

If you have previously worked with Mommers lead and would like to use a comparable Cascade profile, send us the Mommers profile number or the dimensions of the lead.

We can compare:

face width
channel width
core thickness
profile shape
reinforcement requirements
required quantity

This is especially useful for restoration projects where matching the dimensions of existing leadwork is important.

Need a profile that is not listed online?

Fenix Glas stocks many of the most commonly used Cascade profiles, but the possibilities are broader than the products shown as immediately available in our webshop.

If you require a particular profile, a large quantity or a profile for a restoration project, please contact us with the required dimensions. We will check whether the profile is available from stock or can be included in a supplier order.
