Frank van den Ham folded fusing bowls
Another object in the series ‘folded bowls, this bowl has a shape that became one of the trademarks of Frank van den Ham’s recent work in glass fusing. The object is a one-off, made in 2023 in Franks studio in Bali, Indonesia.
In several firings up to 820 °C (1500 °F) glass was fused. By applying heat, many parts, carefully cut from coloured sheets of glass, became one flat slab. The slab was ground and polished to remove all traces on the side it was fused on to achieve a total, shiny, transparent object. Then, in a second or third firing, the slab became a bowl by slumping it through a hole in a mould, a process requiring much monitoring. After cutting off the parts the slump rested on and meticulously grinding and polishing the rim, the bowl got its final shape.
Through a delicate game of interfering lines, the object shows itself differently from each angle; where the lines cross, a different colour shows. This is a not-too-big object that will easily find a place in your home or collection.
The size of the object, height x width x depth, is 9,5 x 23,5 x 8,5 cm.
