Two cultures connected
Ida Bagus Oka, a master carver in Mas, Bali, carved the wooden form designed by Frank. The used wood is ‘Suar’, also called rainwood.
Frank repeated the shape in glass. First, a slab of mainly yellows, browns and okers was fused. The side that rested on the kiln shelf was ground and polished, and then the slab was slumped through an oval hole.
The parts the glass rested on during slumping were removed, and the edge was ground and polished. In a third firing, the glass part, by then a bowl shape, got its final shape.
The combination of wood and glass, in a sense a combination of two cultures, became, with its natural colours, wood and transparency, a work that shows the artist's connection with the island he’s been living on for many years.
The size of each part is, height x width x depth, + 15 x 38 x 14 cm.
